Day 20, Rainbows

Who doesn't love a rainbow?  Seeing one spread its majestic arch  across the sky is one of the most magical feelings on this earth. I've developed an instinct for them over the years and can almost always sense when the conditions are just right for one to appear. We were riding in the car back in the spring, the rain had just stopped, the sun was beginning to peek out just a bit, and there was that warm glow about the sky. I said to Charlie and the boys, "Keep a look out; there's about to be a rainbow" and sure enough, no more than the words were out of my mouth, there it was in all its brilliant colors of glory, splayed out over our small downtown.

I'm not sure how anyone can look up to the skies to that and not believe it is the miraculous work of God. It is a gift and a promise from Him to us and always leaves me feeling loved, cherished and awestruck.

12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant I am making between me and you and every living creature with you, a covenant for all generations to come: 13 I have set my rainbow in the clouds, and it will be the sign of the covenant between me and the earth. 14 Whenever I bring clouds over the earth and the rainbow appears in the clouds, 15 I will remember my covenant between me and you and all living creatures of every kind. Never again will the waters become a flood to destroy all life.16 Whenever the rainbow appears in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and all living creatures of every kind on the earth.”  (Genesis 9: 12-16)

We went to Rondanthe the first week in August and on our second night there, the sun finally came out and the boys hit the ocean. They'd been out there for a few minutes when Dracen came bursting through the door of the cottage saying, "Look! Come, look outside!" I walked out on the deck to the most beautiful double rainbow spread wide across the ocean's horizon that I had ever seen. All I could say was, "Wow. Just wow."

I couldn't get a full shot of it from where I was with my iPhone but I managed a little taste as Dracen shot back down the steps and across the sand where he practically took a flying leap to rejoin his brother in the waves. Later when he came back in, he told me how awesome it was to be out there with the double rainbow behind him and the sunset in front of him. Then it hit me that it was Darin's birthday (a day that was once very difficult for me) and I  just smiled to myself and said, I know that was You, God. Thanks.
